# Create your first agent

> Set up an AI voice agent with instructions, voice, and behavior settings.

## Create an agent

**1. Open the agent dialog**

From your dashboard, click the **+ New agent** button. A dialog will appear asking for basic details.

**2. Fill in the basics**

* **Name** — a descriptive name like "Sales assistant" or "Support agent".
* **Description** (optional) — a short note for your own reference.

**3. Write instructions**

The instructions field is the most important part. This is where you tell the agent:

* Who it represents (company name, role)
* How to greet callers
* What topics it can help with
* When to transfer or escalate

```text theme={null}
You are the reception assistant for Bakkerij van der Berg.
Greet callers warmly and help them with:
- Opening hours and location
- Ordering cakes and pastries
- Questions about allergens
If a caller wants to speak to a manager, transfer the call.
Always be friendly and professional.
```

> See [writing effective instructions](https://docs.assist.fm/agents/instructions) for advanced tips.

**4. Choose a voice**

Select from available voices: **Ash**, **Ballad**, **Coral**, **Sage**, or **Verse**. Each has a distinct tone and character.

> [!TIP]
>
> You can preview voices by starting a test call after saving your agent.

**5. Save and test**

Click **Save**. Your agent is now ready. Use the microphone button to start a test conversation.
